Bajaj Finance Q1 FY27: A ₹5.47 Lakh Crore Loan Book, 112% Gold Loan Growth, and 62 AI Agents
At a glance
Bajaj Finance lends money to roughly one in eleven Indians. A growing share of that work is now done by software agents, which do not take lunch breaks.
Revenue for the three months to June 2026 was ₹23,165 crore, up 18.7% on a year earlier. Profit after tax attributable to owners was ₹5,986 crore, up 27.4%. Assets under management — the total loan book the company runs — crossed ₹5.46 lakh crore, a rise of 24%. ₹36,969 crore of that was added in the quarter alone. The company describes this as a record quarterly addition to assets under management. The customer franchise reached 124.43 million.
The composition of that growth varied widely by product. The gold loan book grew 112% to ₹21,152 crore. Lending to micro, small and medium enterprises grew 2%. Management attributes that softness to risk-led pruning begun last July. It expects growth there to return by around the three months to December 2026.
Provisions include a ₹296 crore prudent management and macro-economic overlay, a cushion set aside beyond the usual rules. Management links the overlay to geopolitical and monsoon uncertainty. Loan loss as a share of average assets under finance was 1.54%, against 1.87% a year earlier.
In a server room somewhere, 62 AI agents now write every one of the company's business requirement documents, the internal specifications that tell engineers what to build.
Introduction
Bajaj Finance Limited is India's largest private-sector NBFC, a lender that is not a bank. It lends to retail, small business and commercial customers across urban and rural India. It also accepts deposits from the public and from companies, alongside a broader financial services suite.
The company sits inside the Bajaj group under Bajaj Finserv Ltd, which holds 51.30%. It consolidates two subsidiaries: Bajaj Housing Finance, at 86.70%, and Bajaj Financial Securities, wholly owned. Two associates, Snapwork Technologies and Pennant Technologies, sit alongside them.
The recent record is busy. In December 2024 the company unveiled its 3.0 strategy. It described the plan as a transformation into a FINAI, its own term for an AI-driven financial services company. In the year to March 2026 that meant a dedicated AI workforce of 203 people. The same year, 52 million voice interactions were processed. ₹5,520 crore of loan disbursements were originated through AI-led channels. For the year to March 2027, the AI unit is being expanded to 400 people, with another 300 added to digital platforms.
Corporate housekeeping has been equally active. On 2 December 2025 the company sold 16.66 crore shares in Bajaj Housing Finance for about ₹1,587.82 crore. The sale was a step towards the housing arm's minimum public shareholding requirement, the rule that keeps enough of a listed company in public hands. It booked an exceptional gain of ₹1,416.38 crore and reduced its holding to 86.7032%.
In November 2025 the Government of India notified four new labour codes, consolidating 29 existing laws. That produced a one-time consolidated charge of ₹265.22 crore for past service gratuity cost, presented as an exceptional item.
Management reshuffled in late 2025. Manish Jain was elevated to Deputy CEO, taking on loan against securities, commercial lending and deposits. Jennifer Fernandes was elevated to Chief Human Resources Officer. Anupam Sirbhaiya moved to Bajaj Finserv as Group Chief HR. Neelesh Sarda was re-appointed Chief Compliance Officer from 1 February 2026.
Business model
Bajaj Finance's business model is straightforward in the way an octopus is straightforward: one animal, many arms, all of them busy.
The consumer arm finances consumer durables, digital products, lifestyle goods and two- and three-wheelers. It also runs EMI cards, solar finance, retailer finance and salaried personal loans. The EMI card franchise stood at 97.71 million cards in force on 30 June 2026. That is roughly one EMI card for every 14 Indians.
Lending to micro, small and medium enterprises covers unsecured working capital, loans to self-employed professionals, secured business loans and used-car finance. Medical and industrial equipment finance sits in the same arm. Commercial lending does loan against securities, IPO financing and mid-corporate work. Rural lending handles gold loans, microfinance, tractor finance and affordable mortgages. Deposits are taken from retail and corporate savers. Payments cover prepaid instruments, UPI, bill payments and FASTag, plus merchant QR codes and card machines. Insurance is distributed across life, general and health.
Then the subsidiaries. Bajaj Housing Finance does home loans, loan against property, lease rental discounting and developer finance. Its assets under management stand at ₹1,49,624 crore. Bajaj Financial Securities does broking, depository services, margin trading and ESOP financing, with assets under management of ₹9,770 crore.
The distribution behind all of this is large. There are 4,073 locations and more than 249,750 active distribution points. There are 1,701 gold loan branches and 447 microfinance branches. The company employs 73,261 people full time, supported by 86,301 fixed-term contract staff.
The consolidated loan book in June 2026 leans on mortgages at 32%, with urban lending next at 30%. Rural accounts for 12%, while small business and commercial lending hold 13% each.
