Caplin Point Q1 FY27: Revenue Up 19.6% to ₹610 Cr, Six USFDA Approvals Since January, and ₹505 Cr of Inventory, Nearly Half of It Parked Next Door to the Customer
At a glance
Caplin Point Laboratories sells generic medicines, which are copies of drugs whose patents have expired. Its markets lie in Latin America, Francophone Africa and the United States.
The three months to June 2026 brought a board meeting, a dividend and a reshuffle of directors. Since January, USFDA approval letters have arrived at the pace other firms manage courier deliveries.
Revenue from operations was ₹610.36 crore, up 19.6% on a year earlier. Operating profit was ₹213.47 crore, up 20.1%. Profit attributable to owners came to ₹176.91 crore, up 15.8%. Earnings per share were ₹23.27. Against the previous three months, revenue moved 1.7%, which in pharmaceuticals counts as shifting slightly in one's chair.
The United States segment reported revenue of ₹134.29 crore, against ₹106.69 crore a year earlier. Its segment result went from ₹9.86 crore to ₹33.27 crore. That is more than triple, while the rest of the table was still finding its reading glasses.
Inventory stood at ₹505 crore on 30 June 2026. Management says the company built that pile on purpose. Borrowings were ₹221.21 crore. The figure has stayed within a few crore of ₹220 crore for five straight years, with the discipline of a man on a strict diet.
The company operates in 23 countries and keeps warehouses across two continents. Management sizes the capital spending programme at over ₹1,000 crore.
Introduction
Caplin Point Laboratories was incorporated in 1990. Per its own presentation, it began life as a contract manufacturer making plain vanilla generics, medicines sold without a brand name.
The company describes three eras since. First the contract manufacturer. Then a market-led company with a negative working-capital business across two main geographies, meaning customers paid before suppliers had to be paid. Now a technology- and research-led marketer, selling generics, branded generics, specialty molecules and injectables.
The geography is the plot twist. A Chennai pharmaceutical company built its business not in India and not in the United States, but in Latin America and Francophone Africa. Subsidiaries sit in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. Four more operate in Ecuador, Colombia, Chile and Mexico. Most are parked under a Hong Kong holding company called Caplin Point Far East. The structure chart is effectively a passport with a balance sheet attached.
The American chapter came later. The injectable unit's liquid facility received European Union and USFDA approvals. Fidelity invested into Caplin Steriles. The company acquired an active ingredient plant in Vizag. It then incorporated Caplin Steriles USA Inc to sell under its own label. In the year to March 2026 it bought 10 approved injectable and ophthalmic ANDAs, the United States licences that permit a generic to be sold. The filing puts their addressable market at 473.2 million US dollars.
The company notes it has appeared on Forbes' "Asia's 200 Best Under a Billion" list seven times. That is the corporate equivalent of being told one looks young, seven years running. It is also a member of the BSE 250 SmallCap Index, alongside a market capitalisation of ₹21,176 crore.
The leadership bench, per the presentation: C.C. Paarthipan as Chairman, described as a first-generation entrepreneur focused on the bottom of the pyramid. Ashok Partheeban and Vivek Partheeban are Vice Chairmen, overseeing Latin America and regulated markets respectively. Dr. Sridhar Ganesan is Managing Director. D. Muralidharan is Chief Financial Officer and, from 12 August 2026, also a Whole-Time Director.
Business model
Caplin makes medicine for places much of the pharmaceutical industry forgot to put on its map. It then parks that medicine next to the pharmacy door.
The portfolio, per the company: more than 5,000 registered products across over 650 formulations. It covers 36 therapeutic segments and more than 65% of the World Health Organization's essential drug list.
The dosage forms read like a pharmacology exam's answer key. Tablets, capsules, injections and eye drops. Oral liquids, soft gels, ointments and creams. Gels, injectable powders, suppositories and ovules. Pre-mix bags, inhalers, sprays and intravenous infusions. If a molecule can be swallowed, injected, dripped or sprayed, Caplin has probably registered it somewhere between Tegucigalpa and Santiago.
The emerging-markets engine runs 75% unbranded generics and 25% branded ones. Wholesale takes 45% of the channel mix and retail 35%. Institutional buyers account for the remaining 20%. The company cites more than 30,000 distribution touchpoints across Latin America.
Then there is the warehouse habit. The Chairman told analysts that 20% of products always sit in warehouses next to the customer, carrying six months of stock. On 30 June 2026, 47% of the ₹505 crore inventory was at those near-customer warehouses. Another 23% was in transit and 30% was in India. So roughly a quarter of the inventory is, at any moment, floating on the ocean. The Chairman's own description is that the model "created a fan club for Caplin products". He argues products may get commoditised but the business model will not.
Manufacturing runs on a make-and-buy split: 60% in-house and 40% outsourced to partners. Exports ship 76% from India and 24% from China. The company describes this as a lean structure that de-risks against cost escalations and currency moves.
